Host City

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a very attractive setting spread over seven hills, boarding the Tagus River and facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Historians attribute to the Phoenicians the foundation of Lisbon around 1200 BC. Since then Celts, Romans, Visigoths and Moors successively occupied Lisbon, the later having remained in the country for four centuries until 1147, when the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, conquered the city. Lisbon became the capital of Portugal in 1255.

In 1755 Lisbon was severely damaged by a strong earthquake but it was rebuilt soon after under the leadership of Marquês de Pombal.

Nowadays Lisbon has about 2 million inhabitants and shows relevant contrasts from wide avenues to narrow and picturesquely narrow streets and paths, and from monuments and museums to modern multi-storey buildings and shopping centres. Nightlife in Lisbon is well known by locals and visitors, specially the typical old districts of Alfama, Madragoa and Bairro Alto where many "Casa de Fado", in which rich gastronomy, typical national song - the Fado and regional dances can be enjoyed.

The site of the last World Exhibition of the 20th century, the EXPO 98, is now used for cultural events, which will be available to the congress participants and their companions.

Post-conference tours will give the participants the opportunity to see more of Portugal and of its engineering activities.

We are pleased to welcome you to Lisbon.
