ISC’2 International Pile Prediction Event
Keynote lecture by A. Viana da Fonseca (Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto)
In addition, the SW2008 Conference includes a Special Session on the ISC’2 International Pile
Prediction Event. The ISC’2 conference was held in 2004 at the Faculty of Engineering of the
University of Porto (FEUP), Portugal. An experimental site with very extensive site
characterization including a large variety of in-situ tests and also pile load tests were prepared
(static and dynamic). Three different types of piles were loaded axially side by side up to failure
(bored, CFA and driven). A pile prediction event was organized by FEUP and IST/UTL under the auspices
of ISSMGE TC-16 and TC-18. It was a class A prediction event, i.e., all the predictions were submitted
before the conduction of static pile load tests. Four years after, we prepared a book containing the
predictions and a report with the main conclusions and lessons learned from this experience to offer
to the SW2008 participants.

Best Paper Competition
To encourage young researchers interest in pile dynamics issues, the organizing committee
invited all authors under 30 years old to join the paper competition. The winner
of the competition will receive a cash prize of 1000 Euros. The jury will evaluate the paper and the
oral presentation of each candidate. We are looking forward to follow this competition.
Besides this exciting technical program a Short Course prior to the conference and a Workshop immediately
after the conference will take place.

Short Course on Dynamic Pile Testing
September 7, just before SW2008
This course will feature Paulo Pinto (FCTUC), Gina Beim (PDI), Joram Amir (Piletest), Richard Stain
(Testconsult), Peter Middendorp (Profound BV) and Jorge Beim (PDI) as instructors.
The objective of the course is to present the fundamentals of Dynamic Pile Testing to civil engineering
students, practicing engineers, researchers and faculty. Being an introductory course, participants
with little or no experience in the issues of Dynamic Pile Testing are welcome, as well as people
willing to review the fundamentals behind dynamic load testing and integrity testing of deep foundations.
Full details on the technical program and registration are given at:

Workshop on Foundation Testing and Analysis in Lisbon, Portugal
September 11-12, immediately after SW2008
